HISTORY OF THE VFFN

Madelon Schouten, the founder of Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists, once said that the group began with four very interested people. Since November 26, 1991, it has become part of a network of naturalists groups across British Columbia under the umbrella of the Federation of BC naturalists, now BC Nature.

The group was set up to promote birding, the study of wildflowers (of the region), geology, photography of wildflowers, plants, and wildlife and hikes in pursuit of those endeavours. Since 1991, VFFN has continued to grow and enhance the knowledge of its members regarding the natural world.

From 1998 onward the society worked hard to establish the Swan Lake Sanctuary which remains VFFN “jewel in the crown.” There are two bird blinds which provide excellent bird viewing and are enjoyed and visited by many people.
